[Nova-Net] [NLSA-NOVA] Re: Poll VOTING

Kuby,

The only reason I think the NLSA-NOVA group has some promise is because messages from all posters are archived and easily searchable at YahooGroups. It's a shame that the original "Nova-Net" messages weren't archived from the very beginning. Of course, Nova-Net started back when the current YahooGroups was owned by another organization, called Egroups. Getting "in" required some approval by the owners back then. Now, it's another story.

Of course today, it takes some cooperation from subscribers and a sense of belonging to make it a success. Involvement should be easy, and if individuals do not plan to post a message, they should not be required to subscribe. At your NSLA-NOVA site, I noticed that unless your are a subscriber, posted messages cannot be read - and therefore the archives are non-searchable. I would suggest that you make all messages readable (and searchable) to everyone, regardless of membership status. You can always control their (future) postings by requiring membership. You'd be surprised how many individuals will join just because after reading a post, they find that they now have some questions, or have something to say. You can still always moderate newcomers, and gradually give them more privileges as you become more familiar with their posts and their personalities.

I cannot figure out why some groups prohibit mere visitors from reading their content. For the most part, I do not like to join groups when I don't have a clue as to what the discussions are about. The "Subject Header" rarely gives enough incite into the body of the text. But, given the ability of free reading and searches, the NSLA-NOVA group may eventually swell its ranks.

I am the owner/moderator of the Ham-Radio-History group0 on Yahoogroups.

Having started it in 1998, it is nearly 630 subscribers strong; with participants from all around the world. Every posted message has always been "readable" to any visitor since the very beginning. Going there today, you can find the earliest posts from 1998. In addition, many old timers (who are now silent keys) have left their stories and their reminiscences of early ham radio, which otherwise would been lost. Their legacy lives on in the archives. I think that is why our group has grown as successfully as it has. Today, we have two additional moderators, and between the three of us, we are always busy.

Hoping this puts things into perspective...

  I respect you thoughts but here's some questions for you;

Can you "search" through the Nova-NET messages for issues/answers on a
subject you need information? No, you must send out a redundant query
message to the whole NET and HOPE for an answer.

Can you obtain or share NOVA files via Nova-NET? No

Maybe these items are not important to you but your viewpoint is
rather narrow not taking into considerations new users or the services
  provided here.

Nova-NET is a grood mass-market emailer but this type of site offers
much more. The best part is YOU need do nothing but reap the rewards
of the information posted, all the work/effort is upon me and active
  users.

FYI, This is not the only User Group I've started or moderate - check out:
